The COVID19 situation has evolved and gained momentum beyond expectations. In conjunction with our Firefighter Skytower Stair Challenge event partners we have been monitoring and remaining hopeful that we might continue.
Obviously (and sadly) this is not the case – and it is with a real sense of disappointment that I confirm the postponement of the 2020 event until further notice.
Many of you will have seen the Facebook post from Scottie and Heather (Fire Up Events) advising on the current status of this year’s event. For those that haven’t – click here for the link or please find attached their written statement.
Leukaemia & Blood Cancer NZ (LBCNZ) cares deeply about the health and wellbeing of our entire ‘family’ – this includes yourselves, your families, our volunteers, staff and, particularly, the people we serve that are facing cancer.
We know only too well how vulnerable many people in our community are feeling right now, and how important it is for us all to look out for each other and do all we can to ensure the COVID-19 virus does not take hold on our shores as it has overseas.
The potential impact of COVID-19 on Kiwis who are already immune-comprised because of their blood cancer, or the chemotherapy they are undergoing, is a very real and serious concern.
Steps we are taking
In addition to ensuring blood cancer patients and families continue to be looked after by our Support Services team, we are also doing all we can to help in the fight against community spread of the virus because we know this will also help keep patients safe.
This has meant making the very difficult decision to postpone a wide range of our fundraising events in order help keep our communities safe. This of course will be a huge disappointment for all that have trained and raised funds for these events – we hope that we will be able to reschedule at some point in the future when it is safe and responsible to do so
Impact on LBCNZ
Because LBCNZ’s fundraising events account for 75% of the money we raise for patient and family services – postponement also means we are facing very uncertain financial times ahead.
How you can help
The incredible $300,000 already raised will go directly to supporting blood cancer patients around New Zealand, so THANK YOU!
Cancer, unfortunately, never stops, so please consider continuing with your fundraising journey to help blood cancer patients.
Potentially there is an opportunity for each team member and/or Brigade to continue their training and fundraising and complete their 1,103 steps on 23 May 2020 (at a picturesque local site – to show off your beautiful part of the country), along with finish line ‘selfies’ or Gopro video of your achievement that we can share and post on-line.
That effort and sentiment, in itself, would make for an amazing (and heartfelt) library of support and messaging that we can share with patients (and their families).
We remain committed to ensuring that support continues to our patients and that it remains free and accessible to all who need it….please help if you can.
We are eternally grateful for the unwavering support of our event partners, in particular Fire UP Events (lead by Scottie and Heather), and our amazing venue host SkyCity – we thank you and your teams.
Please phone on 0800 15 15 10 or email firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions or concerns, and for more information about reducing the risk of infection for COVID19, we have some information on our website.
In these uncertain times I first want to pass on my very best wishes to you and your loved ones from all of the team here at LBCNZ and hope that you are staying safe and healthy.
